What do all these have in common? Well, currently maybe not much. Many teens with disabilities do not get the benefits of the other four.  Can you remember the first jobs you had and all you learned from them???  When teens do experience summer jobs, part-time jobs, internships or volunteer positions >> they are more likely to be gainfully employed as adults.   These opportunities allow them to explore jobs or careers, learn those “all important soft skills” (like show up on time every…

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder requires attention

 In 2008, 1 in every 88 children, age 8, was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). That statistic jumped to 1 in every 68 in the 2012 statistics reported by the Center for Disease and Control (CDC).  In addition, for each girl diagnosed with ASD four boys are diagnosed. Caucasian children are diagnosed at a higher rate than non-Hispanic and Black subgroups, and of those diagnosed children, age 8, reported by the CDC, 53% have an IQ below the average range.
