How wonderful to have such a great model so close by. We should really look into what Minnesota is doing and get some advice from those who have been advocating for change there.

Parents will meet to brain storm issues we want to address in the next legislative session. We need to hear from you. What challenges are you and your child facing in trying to access needed resources and education for your child? What changes in policy or funding might resolve those issues?  Even if you cannot attend, send our concerns and we will make sure they are discussed at the meeting:

NAMI Basics Education Program
The fundamentals of caring for you, your family and your child with mental illness

NAMI Basics is an education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness. The six session course is taught by trained teachers who are also parents/caregivers of individuals who developed the symptoms of mental illness in childhood. The course provides the fundamentals a caregiver needs to care for themselves, their family, and their child who is living with a mental illness.

The course consists of six classes, lasting 2 ½ hours each. All instruction materials are FREE to participants.

Course elements include:
• The biology of mental illnesses – getting an accurate diagnosis.
• Insights into understanding the lived
experience of the child diagnosed with mental illness.
• Latest research on medical aspects of the illness and advances in treatment.
• Problem-solving, listening and communication skills.
• Overview of systems involved in caring for children and teens.

• Class Time: Tuesday Evenings (6-8 PM)
• Program Duration: May 20th —June 24th 
• Location: Children’s Center for Therapy
1552 Mall Dr., Iowa City

Free on-site child care provided for all children in the family. Sign-up for child care during initial registration.

See the video of Senator Hatch last night saying the budget was approved for $7million to buy down the waiting list for the waivers AND the governor has agreed to approve it! Thank you everyone for your hard work - together we can make a difference!
